Local congregations began to be established in the Chiclayo area as a result of yearly visits in the early 1950’s by Bert and Collen Elliot , missionaries laboring in the neighboring mountains and jungle of northern Peru. Several different missionaries have labored in the vicinity since then, resulting in the formation of 18 assemblies in Chiclayo and the surrounding valley. The northern area of Peru has been predominantly evangelized by offshoots of the “Holiness Movement”, affecting the doctrinal stability of the assemblies. Having targeted the lower income strata of society, the limited education of the believers has hampered their growth and understanding of scripture making solid Biblical teaching a long term priority. In the past, emphasis on numerical growth has induced performance based faith, and so a greater appreciation of God and a deeper understanding of His will in the personal life is needed to establish the Kingdom attitudes in the lives of His people. The rush to name leadership regardless of their Biblical qualifications has left a legalistic legacy, and many of the assemblies are gasping for air as they struggle to overcome these challenges. We are convinced however that prayer and perseverance in the teaching of Scripture are more than sufficient to redirect the vision of the believers toward their Savior and a greater commitment to His service. |
